We have Sydney Landreneau of the Denver Orchid Society coming for a visit to the Utah Orchid Society in February. Sydney is well know in the AOS judging community for her outstanding show exhibits and will be giving a presentation on The Do’s and Don’t s of Orchid Show Exhibits. She has seen many show exhibits and will be presenting various photographic examples and judges comments. Sydney is the current Denver show co-chair.

Remember, 2014 is an exhibit year for the Utah Orchid Society! The UOS has switched to having both the Spring And Fall shows be the same style for the year.

We will be hosting Sydney at The DoDo restaurant starting at 5:30 pm before the meeting. The DoDo restaurant is located at 1355 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City.

Fellow members Clint of Orchid Dynasty and Chad L. will be discussing the advantages and "how" of growing in an enclosure. Chad has numerous terrariums in orchid service and is an accomplished grower (Clint and Chad are AOS award level growers).

The society is planning on having dinner with Clint and Chad at The Sugarhouse Barbecue Company located at 880 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, UT starting at 5:30 pm. Join us if you can make it.

Happy Holiday Season. Hopefully things are going well and your orchids are not too cold. Remember our December Potluck and Auction is this coming Monday, December 9th, with setup like at 6:30 pm or so hoping to start at 7 pm. If you can not make it to the potluck, we try to have the auction start at 8 pm. Please bring an appetizer, side or dessert if coming to the potluck. Remember; bring bug free and interesting orchids for the auction. Hope to see you Monday.

Ron Midgett of New Earth Orchids (Sante Fe, NM) will be our speaker. Ron’s presentation is titled: The 2011 Taiwan International Orchid Show and Taipei Orchid Pavilion – A Peek Into the Orchid World of Taiwan.

Join other society members and Ron for dinner at 5:30pm at the Dodo Restaurant (1355 E 2100 S) before the meeting.

Ron will be bringing plants to sell. He is offering a 10% discount for preorders (contact Ron directly).

Utah Orchid Society Fall Show 2013

Show Time

Be sure to carve out some time to visit our show Saturday, November 2nd (9 am to 5 pm) or Sunday, November 3rd (9am to 5pm).
You do not need to be a member to enter your orchid(s) in the show. Please drop by the Red Butte Garden Orangerie Friday, November 1st from 1 pm to 6 pm to enter your plant(s). Checkout “Orchid Show” under Pages (right column) for additional information.
Orchids will be available for sale and there will be folks at the show to help you get started growing orchids. There are many orchids that make great house plants.
Red Butte Garden is located at 300 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT.

President’s Message – October, 2013

Now that the society is meeting regularly again I can appreciate the collective expertise we amass at any of our gatherings. As I write this, I have a Dendrobium kingianum outside under a tall rose bush. It is a rainy day with night temperatures predicted to be in the forties. While such conditions would be fatal to some members of the dendrobium clan, I know this species can tolerate them just fine, and will probably appreciate nature watering it with a purer product than the tap water I generally use. My source for this information, our own Clint Lewis, will be presenting to us next Monday, the 14th, and will be talking to us about Dendrobium culture. I look forward to learning more about this vast family of plants.

Just as I enjoy learning about any of the plants I grow from the seasoned or new and enthusiastic members, I try not to take for granted the participation of all our society members. You all provide great guidance and contribute so much to each other. Please join us at the Kyoto restaurant, and/or our meeting if you are able.

Regular Meeting for October 14th – Update

In a last minute save Clint has agreed to be our speaker for October. Clint’s talk is titled Dendrobiums – Tips for Successful Cultivation. It has taken a decade or so for me to have some success with Dendrobiums, mostly due to Clint (Walt).

The society will get to enjoy Clint’s 15% discount on purchases to clubs that Clint is giving a talk. You have two options. The first option is to phone or email him with your purchase request and pick the plant(s) up at our regular monthly meeting. The second option is to drop by the shop Saturday, October 12th and make sure you are dealing with Clint. The discount does not apply (in shop) Monday, October 14th, Clint will not be in the shop most of the day.

Update: Oops, forgot that Clint is a vendor in the Denver Orchid Show. Clint will not be in the shop Saturday, October 12th. The above second option is no long available. You may still email or try to phone Clint in Denver to place an order that you can pick up at our regular October meeting.

Time to get back in the Utah Orchid Society groove. Our next regular meeting is quickly approaching. Be sure to plan for David Bird’s talk on Hybridizing with Phragmipediam kovachii Monday, September 9th. Not sure yet when David is getting in so check back to see if we are doing dinner before the meeting.

David is the owner of Bird’s Botanicals in Kansas City, MO. His green house is in a cave. Check out his web site for information and even a video when a local TV station, KC Live visited the "cave". David is bringing plants for sale.

Short Reminder

The Utah Orchid Society takes a break from regular monthly meetings during the months of July and August.

Our Summer BBQ is shaping up to be the first Saturday in August (August 3rd). The BBQ is for members and invited guests. Always a great time. More information to follow.
