Utah Orchid Society

We have Carlos Fighetti (past president of the American Orchid Society) as our speaker for June. Carlos will be giving his presentation titled: Understanding Phalaenopsis. This is a talk about Phalaenopsis species. Currently there are 72 species on the genus, up from the 63 that were in Christenson book. With the publication of Genus Orchidacearum volume 6, the genus now includes these former genera: Doritis and Kingidium (already in Christenson book but not accepted by Kew until the publication of the book), Hygrochilus, Lesliae, Nothodoritis, Ornithochilus and Sedirea.

The talk is about distribution, habitats, morphology, Classification, and influence on the hybrids. In addition, some of the species are covered in detail, showing images and location and information about flowering and culture of that particular species.

For the month May we have Ron Parsons of South San Francisco, California. His photography and encyclopedic knowledge of orchids is known both nationally and internationally. He will be giving his presentation titled: Orchids of Sichuan China.

We have Marni Turkel of Marni Turkel located in Santa Rosa, California as our April 13th speaker. Marni’s presentation is titled "Give it a rest" – Many plants receive a dry rest period in their native habitat and this talk explores some of the factors involved. Learn a bit about weather patterns and the “make it or break it” effect a dry rest period can have on growth and flowering of particular species. You’ll see some plants that many people find hard to bloom and find out how to get a great blooming by giving them what they need.

Remember, nice, clean and bug free. Bring your decorative pots or black cloth to wrap the pots with if the plant pot is "just a pot".

Try to have your plants to the show by 6:00 pm if at all possible. Please preregister your plants using the Plant Registration System (PRS) found in the Pages section under the Orchid Show link. You do not need to be a society member to use the system. If you think you might have some orchids to bring to the show and you do not have access to the PRS please make your request for an ID and password by Tuesday, March 31st at the latest. Preregistration saves an amazing amount of time at the show.

We have John Stubbings of Clown Alley Orchids located in Pasadena, Texas presenting his program titled Cattleyas: “Cattleya Orchid Care” which includes where the species come from, species photos and general growing recommendations for Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Epidendrum and related genera and hybrids.

John is bringing plants for sale. In addition, if you pre-order you will receive a 10% discount. The web site has available a full catalog. You must order by email or by phone and mention the order is to be delivered at our meeting.

We have Linda Wilhelm of Woodland Orchids located in Charlotte NC presenting her talk titled The Wonderful World of Oncidiums (mostly discussing species). Oncidiums tend to be showy and can have awesome inflorescences.

The January 2015 meeting of the Utah Orchid Society will be an open forum meeting about Orchid Pests! The January meeting will be based on the Orchid Digest presentation “Orchid Pests” by Loren Batchman.

The question to ask yourself is not: “if you will get orchid pests?” The question is: “when will you get orchid pests?” And when you are stricken with these little beasties in your collection, will you be able to identify them and properly handle the infestation? Come learn and and help teach other members with knowledge you have to share!

We have Hadley Cash of Marriott Orchids as our speaker for October. Hadley will be giving his presentation titled: Complex Paphiopedilum Hybridizing. Hadley is a very well recognized breeder of complex Paphiopedilums.
