Our summer dormancy ends in September! It’s time for an orchid fix.

We are excited to have a returning favorite: Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids! Always an enthusiastic speaker full of knowledge! Alan will be giving his talk on: Sarcochilus, Exciting Modern Hybrids From Australia” – See the plants that are finally available to us and learn how to grow them!

Alan will be bringing orchids for sale. He has also offered a 20% discount for pre-orders. Alan says he may be out of a few items so it is suggested that you email or call in your order to make sure your selection is available. (Gold Country Orchids Email – gcorchids@aol.com, 916-645-8600)

For our June 13th meeting, we have Lauris Rose of Cal Orchids as our speaker!

Lauris will introduce us as to who is Cal Orchids. She will outline what they grow in a simulated nursery visit. After 28 years in the business, they have built up one of the most diverse collections of any nursery around the world. Lauris explains that she will cover a lot of territory and geographic habitats during the talk. There are stories weaved throughout, cultural needs addressed and everyone will leave with some confidence on how to grow the plants discussed.

On May 9th we have Theresa Hill from Hillsview Gardens coming to Salt Lake City and giving a presentation on complex paphiopedilum breeding! It should be a very interesting meeting!

We have Dan Newman of Hanging Gardens as our speaker for April. Dan will be giving his presentation Dendrobiums: Jewels of Gondwana.

Gondwana. Pronunciation: /ɡɒnˈdwɑːnə/ (also Gondwanaland) A vast continental area believed to have existed in the southern hemisphere and to have resulted from the break-up of Pangaea in Mesozoic times. It comprised present-day Arabia, Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and the peninsula of India.

We have Clint Lewis of Orchid Dynasty as our speaker for March. Clint will be giving his presentation on Re-potting and remounting Orchids..

We have Francisco Miranda of Miransda Orchids as our speaker for February. Francisco will be giving his presentation titled: Cattleyas in Brazil. There will be numerous photographs with orchids in sitsu.

Reminding you that this evening (January 11, 2016) is our annual auction that was originally scheduled for December. Please only bring healthy and bug free orchids and/or supplies. Please do not bring in used pots.

We will NOT be enjoying a potluck or meeting at a restaurant for dinner before the auction. The auction will follow our normal meeting hours of the front door being unlocked at 7:00 pm with the auction starting at 7:30 pm. The auction will be held at the Utah Associated Garden Clubs Garden Center, 1602 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The auction is an important source of funding for the society, please come and participate.

Have received several phone calls indicating that there is considerable snow accumulation and that the roads in the area of the garden center are in extremely bad/hazardous condition. Given that the winter storm warning is currently good through Tuesday morning, we are rescheduling the Potluck and Auction for our January Meeting. There is a possibility that we may select a night later in the month but is doubtful.

We are proud to have Jason Fisher of Orchids Ltd. out of Plymouth, MN as our speaker. Jason Fischer will speak about the breeding techniques Orchids Ltd. has used to create new shapes, fragrance, colors and growth habits through cross pollination. He will also discuss techniques used to grow different varieties of Phragmipedium as not all species require the same culture.

The society will be hosting Jason for dinner at The Red Iguana located at 736 N Temple, Salt Lake City staring at 5:15 pm. You are welcome to join fellow members.
