We have Francisco Miranda of Miransda Orchids as our speaker for February. Francisco will be giving his presentation titled: Cattleyas in Brazil. There will be numerous photographs with orchids in sitsu.

Francisco is bringing plants for sale.

Reminding you that this evening (January 11, 2016) is our annual auction that was originally scheduled for December. Please only bring healthy and bug free orchids and/or supplies. Please do not bring in used pots.

We will NOT be enjoying a potluck or meeting at a restaurant for dinner before the auction. The auction will follow our normal meeting hours of the front door being unlocked at 7:00 pm with the auction starting at 7:30 pm. The auction will be held at the Utah Associated Garden Clubs Garden Center, 1602 E 2100 S, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The auction is an important source of funding for the society, please come and participate.

Have received several phone calls indicating that there is considerable snow accumulation and that the roads in the area of the garden center are in extremely bad/hazardous condition. Given that the winter storm warning is currently good through Tuesday morning, we are rescheduling the Potluck and Auction for our January Meeting. There is a possibility that we may select a night later in the month but is doubtful.

We are proud to have Jason Fisher of Orchids Ltd. out of Plymouth, MN as our speaker. Jason Fischer will speak about the breeding techniques Orchids Ltd. has used to create new shapes, fragrance, colors and growth habits through cross pollination. He will also discuss techniques used to grow different varieties of Phragmipedium as not all species require the same culture.

The society will be hosting Jason for dinner at The Red Iguana located at 736 N Temple, Salt Lake City staring at 5:15 pm. You are welcome to join fellow members.

For our October 12th meeting we will be visited by George Hatfield of Hatfield Orchids. George’s specialty: Cymbidium orchids!

It is difficult to grow this type of orchid in Utah. George will use his experience and expertise to tell us what type of Cymbidum will grow here and how to grow it well.

George will also be bringing plants for sale which he has selected for good growing in Utah.

So attend this month’s meeting for an exceptional evening of learning!

Our meeting is an open forum discussion on orchid growing tips and tricks. Great time to get ideas on how to do something or deal with a plant related problem.

We have Carlos Fighetti (past president of the American Orchid Society) as our speaker for June. Carlos will be giving his presentation titled: Understanding Phalaenopsis. This is a talk about Phalaenopsis species. Currently there are 72 species on the genus, up from the 63 that were in Christenson book. With the publication of Genus Orchidacearum volume 6, the genus now includes these former genera: Doritis and Kingidium (already in Christenson book but not accepted by Kew until the publication of the book), Hygrochilus, Lesliae, Nothodoritis, Ornithochilus and Sedirea.

The talk is about distribution, habitats, morphology, Classification, and influence on the hybrids. In addition, some of the species are covered in detail, showing images and location and information about flowering and culture of that particular species.
